Genealogy: Celebrating the Legacy of Rafa Fernández and the Artistic Journey of his Daughters

To celebrate the legacy of the national painter Rafa Fernández, the Genealogy exhibition will show 17 works by the acclaimed national painter, which include unpublished pieces and with little explored techniques of the author, such as watercolors.

This presentation will also exhibit 16 works by Alma Fernández and 17 by Karla Fernández, both daughters of the painter. The techniques of the pieces vary, but range from screen printing, graphic and illuminated works, theaters and more.

This exhibition, in which all the works will be for sale, will open on September 14, at 7 pm, at the Estación Atocha restaurant in the Don Bosco neighborhood, in San José.

From there, the family art exhibition will be open for a month, from Monday to Sunday from 12 to 9 p.m.

Genealogy is the first exhibition that brings together Fernández’s work with the style of his daughters, who honor the memory of their father to move the senses of viewers.

“The art environment is where we develop and where we stay involved. It was always the natural thing. We are five brothers and we all have a special sensitivity for art,” recalled the painter Alma Fernández.

Even, as the artist added, a section of Genealogy is completely dedicated to new works by the entire family, which are framed in the same way to “reflect a dialogue between the characters.”

“It is the first time we exhibit together. It is emotional and meaningful for us. After my dad left, which was 5 years ago, we are very involved. “Everything we do has to do with art and especially with our dad, now more than ever,” added the artist.

In addition to featuring the Fernández family exhibits, Geneacología will have a reproduction of the famous Patria painting, recreated with the giclée method (used to make artistic prints from a source digitized with an ink jet).

Rafa Fernández, who died in 2018, was one of the most representative artists and painters of Costa Rica. He obtained the Aquileo J. Echeverría Prize in Arts on three occasions: 1968, 1972 and 1975; as well as the Magón National Culture Award in 2002.
