Gender Disparity in Long-Term Absenteeism: Women’s Rates Almost Twice as High as Men’s, and Growing

The Attentia data also shows something striking: that long-term absenteeism due to illness among women is almost twice as high as among men and that the difference has increased.

For example, absenteeism due to illness lasting longer than one year has increased particularly sharply among women in 2022 and 2023. If it was still 4.67 percent in 2021, it was already 5.62 percent in 2022 and even 5.9 percent last year, compared to 2.65 percent for male employees.

Absenteeism between one month and one year also increased among women: from 2.66 percent in 2021 to 2.92 percent in 2022 and 3.18 percent in 2023, compared to 2.07 percent among men in 2023. When it comes to short-term absenteeism, the differences between men and women are much smaller.
