As European Commissioner Kadri Simson said after a meeting of EU energy ministers, it is necessary to reduce gas consumption where possible and update national contingency plans.
“From the very beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we knew that very serious disruptions were possible, and now it seems likely. We have done a lot of important work to prepare for this. But now is the time to step it up,” she said.
The European Commission will reportedly present a plan in July to coordinate preparations for further gas shocks as Russia cut or cut supplies to 12 of the EU’s 27 countries.
