Garut Diphtheria Outbreak, KBB-Cimahi Began to Be Alert

West Bandung – The West Bandung Regency Health Office (Dinkes) is wary of the emergence of diphtheria cases following the incident in Garut Regency until it was determined to be an outbreak.

One of the steps taken is to alert the puskesmas in each village to carry out sweeping, especially at special locations (locus) where diphtheria vaccination results are still minimal.

“Through the puskesmas, sweeping will be carried out directly to the RW in the villages. From now on, we will return data on the locus that lacks vaccinations,” said Head of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) at the KBB Health Office, Nurul Rasyihan when contacted, Thursday (23/2/ 2023).

He said that until now there have been no reports of residents being exposed to diphtheria. However, his party is still monitoring the potential emergence of diphtheria cases at certain locus.

“Currently there are no reports, the last incident was recorded last year. Hopefully there will be no cases this year,” said Nurul.

He said that diphtheria itself is not too severe but its transmission can spread quickly, especially in children with less or no immunization status.

“So this (diphtheria) can spread through contact with people who are suffering, unlike Covid-19 through the air. On average it also attacks children who have not been immunized,” said Nurul.

Meanwhile, the Cimahi City Health Office is also wary of the emergence of diphtheria cases. Efforts are being made namely monitoring the mobility of the people of Garut Regency.

“The mobility of Cimahi residents is quite high, especially since Garut is not too far from here. It could be that someone is from there to here or vice versa, that’s why they are being monitored,” said Head of P2P City Cimahi Dwihadi Isnalini.

Similar to West Bandung, his party has not received reports of Cimahi residents being exposed to diphtheria. However, his party appealed to residents who feel symptoms such as diphtheria to check themselves at a health facility.

“Until now there are still no (reports). Only if you feel a high fever, swallowing pain, and other symptoms such as diphtheria go straight to the doctor,” said Dwihadi.
