Furious French Residents Spray Angry Texts On Shutters at Emily in Paris Filming Locations

There may be a lot of filming going on at the moment for the Netflix hit Emily in Paris, but you can’t count on a warm welcome from residents of the French capital. Furious French people have sprayed angry texts on shutters at film locations in the city.

Since the series – which is now in full swing for filming on season four – hordes of extra tourists have been coming to the City of Light to have their photos taken at the locations seen in Emily in Paris. According to the French, it is called ‘l’invasion des imbéciles’, or roughly better translated: the invasion of the imbeciles.

On the roller shutter of a building opposite the restaurant that is regularly seen in the series, it can now be read: ‘Emily is destroying it all’. While another shutter reads ‘Emily not welcome’. Previously, the same slogan was written on a fountain and the hashtag #Emilynotwelcome was used on Instagram.

The consternation surrounding the series cannot exactly be called new. An opinion piece in the French newspaper Le Monde stated: “They think the neighborhood is theirs. Emily in Paris – an invasive neighbor”. Lily Collins, the daughter of singer Phil Collins and the leading actress in the series, has also responded to vandalism on an image of her on a billboard. “I can’t say I love it, but a 10 for the effort,” she joked on Instagram at the time.

For a long time it didn’t seem to work with new recordings of the well-known Netflix series. First the screenwriters’ strike turned the planning upside down, later also the actors’ strike. Most series were able to return to work after the strike, but Emily in Paris faced an additional hurdle. After all, the makers wanted to film in the French capital, including at the Eiffel Tower, and that is where the Olympic Games will take place this summer. Moreover, the city closes for filmmakers months earlier. After mid-March you will no longer be able to enter Paris with a TV crew. Bad luck for the makers of Emily in Paris, who wanted to film in May.

Move to Rome

After much consultation, we managed to film from mid-January. A boost, because there were already reports that the cast and crew would move to Rome. “While Emily’s heart will always remain true to Paris, her life will take unexpected turns in the coming season,” actress Lily Collins said at a Netflix event last year.
