The ski season is at its peak and the winter holidays are in six federal states: next weekend, the autobahns will be even more crowded than in previous weeks.
Things will be tight this coming weekend (February 18th to 20th), especially on the classic winter sports routes in the Alps and the low mountain ranges. “Strong nerves and a lot of time” are required according to the ADAC. This also applies to the return journey.
The Auto Club Europa (ACE) is also expecting lively travel on Saturday and Sunday. But not only ski and toboggan fans are out and about, other vacationers are likely to make their way. Winter holidays are in six federal states.
Away from the winter sports routes, however, traffic should mostly flow undisturbed, according to the ADAC. Classic exceptions are the heavy commuter traffic on Friday afternoons, disruptions caused by wintry weather, accidents and construction sites. However, their number has fallen from 669 in the previous week to 644, according to the ADAC.
Elbe tunnel closed
Motorway closures can also increase travel times due to detours. Among other things, the Hamburg Elbe Tunnel is closed for 56 hours at the weekend. The A 7 (Flensburg – Hanover) is closed in both directions between Hamburg-Volkspark and Hamburg-Heimfeld from Friday 9:00 p.m. to Monday 5:00 a.m.
According to the ADAC, local traffic will be diverted via the Elbe bridges. National traffic is advised to use the A 1, A 21 and B 205 between the Horster Dreieck and Neumünster-Süd.

In Austria and Switzerland, too, the access roads to the winter sports areas and the transit routes are particularly affected. According to the ADAC, things will sometimes only progress at a walking pace on the motorways in neighboring countries.
In Austria, the western (A 1), the Tauern (A 10), the Inntal (A 12), the Brenner autobahn (A 13), the Fernpass route (B 179) and the Tyrolean, Salzburg and Vorarlberg federal roads. In Switzerland there is a lot of traffic: the Gotthard route (A 2), the route St. Gallen – Zurich – Bern (A 1) and the access roads to the winter sports areas of Graubünden, the Bernese Oberland, Valais and Central Switzerland.
