The spill is necessary to complete the process site remediation, despite the fears of local residents and fishermen’s associations. To cool the plants damaged in the accident ten years ago, about 140 tons of contaminated water – in which tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, is added to the tanks every day. In the area adjacent to the plant there are already more than a thousand tanks, and according to the manager of the plant, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), the maximum permitted capacity will be reached by the summer.

According to the project presented last April by state authorities and Tepco, the liquid will be released into the ocean starting from the spring of 2023, and in this regard Kishida says he is willing to provide all scientific evidence on the activities and the maximum level of transparency for dispel various concerns.

The announcement follows the increasingly pressing line of the executive for the reuse of nuclear energy, which according to government leaders will serve to achieve the objectives of zeroing CO2 emissions. There are currently 9 nuclear power plants in operation in Japan. 54 reactors were in operation before the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan, and the country derived about 30% of its energy needs from the atom.
