350 years ago, in 1673, the first public coffee shop in Germany was opened in Bremen. This was a milestone because the city became a world-renowned coffee location and coffee one of the most important trading goods for the Hanseatic city. It was an absolute luxury that really only rich people could afford. A journeyman had to work a whole month to be able to afford a pound of coffee.
The coffee shops of the time were small, simply furnished rooms in which the exotic drink from Yemen was served. Women were not allowed. That changed when coffee moved into private households and became more and more popular. Bremen continued to be the German coffee city and merchant Ludwig Roselius made an important contribution to this. He invented decaffeinated coffee and his Kaffee Hag became a globally successful brand. Its production in Bremen was even the largest coffee company in the world for a short time. A legacy that still lives on in the Hanseatic city today, because there are still many roasting plants.
