“Freud” on Netflix: good mystery thriller instead of biopic – TV

The first Austrian Netflix series “Freud” is in the starting blocks. We reveal what you can expect.

Netflix has been in Austria for almost six years and only now is the first Austro series flickering on the screens. And the skepticism is great: “Freud” is not a biopic, but a series in which historical facts are mixed with a fictitious crime.

The focus is on 30-year-old Sigmund Freud, who lives in Vienna in 1886. He is enthusiastic about hypnosis, a new method for which he is laughed at by the conservative society of Viennese doctors.

At least the well-known medium Fleur Salomé believes him. Inspector Alfred Kiss soon became aware of Freud. A serial killer is in mischief in Vienna. Can the later founder of psychoanalysis help with this case?

Very Austrian and many surprising twists

Anyone who believes that this is a shallow series à la “SOKO Donau” is wrong. It’s much more of a cross-genre series

– something between crime, drama, horror and mystery. “Freud” scores with many surprising twists. It is never boring or predictable. And it’s a very Austrian series. It is dark and there is a lot of talk in the Viennese dialect.

Cleverly implemented, good actors

The fact that the series is not a biopic doesn’t bother at all. Director Marvin Krevin cleverly combines the biographical facts with the fictional crime case. Also worthy of praise is the cast’s acting performance, especially leading actor Robert Finster (“Keeper of my brother”), who has only appeared in a few films so far, stands out here. Other actors include Ella Rumpf, Anja Kling and Phillip Hochmair (ok, he’s the only one who looks a bit artificial).

It is quite possible that the series will be very well received by international audiences. The fact is: As an Austrian serial junkie you shouldn’t miss “Freud”.

ORF eins shows the eight-part “Freud” from March 15th (in double episodes). It will be available on Netflix from March 23.
