Frenchman Ugo Humbert blows away American JJ Wolf in Shanghai

Fifty-six points won against 20, barely 57 minutes of play and two short sets, 6-1, 6-2: the Frenchman Ugo Humbert largely outclassed the American JJ Wolf on Wednesday in Shanghai, and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Chinese Masters 1000.

“I put in a great performance, with a very high level of play,” rejoiced the left-hander from Metz after the match. “I’m very proud, I managed to stay focused from the start to the end of the match.”

Very solid on serve, with 31 points won out of 34 on his commitment, ultra precise and powerful in his shots, full of confidence, Humbert, already defeated by world No.6 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the previous round, left no hope to JJ Wolf (51st in the ranking) for their first meeting in the final draw of a tournament.

The first set, completed with two shutouts in favor of the Frenchman, turned out to be a demonstration in his favor, with a staggering total of 28 points won out of 35, but the second was barely more clingy, even if Wolf still won managed to win his first serve to, briefly, lead 1-0.

The last Frenchman competing in Shanghai since the eliminations of Arthur Fils and Adrian Mannarino on Monday, Humbert will face in the quarter-final the American Tommy Paul (12th in the world) or the Russian Andrey Rublev (7th), who defeated Mannarino in the previous round.

During the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing, Ugo Humbert had already achieved a great performance by eliminating Andrey Rublev in almost three hours of play 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) in the round of 16, before to be eliminated in the quarter by another Russian, Daniil Medvedev.

Currently ranked 34th in the ATP rankings, Humbert should at least re-enter the Top 30 after Shanghai, or even threaten the best Frenchman, Adrian Mannarino (24th).
