French President Emmanuel Macron Jeered by Demonstrators while Addressing the Future of Europe on State Visit to Netherlands

The Hague

President French Emmanuel Macron harassed and jeered by demonstrators while addressing the future of Europe on a state visit to Dutch on Tuesday (11/4) local time. Macron’s visit abroad was carried out at a time when France was hit by a crisis that was triggered pension reform.

As reported AFP, Wednesday (12/4/2023), Macron’s state visit to the Netherlands was recorded as the first visit by a French President in the last 23 years. This visit was also carried out when Macron sparked controversy with his comments about Taiwan, the United States (US) and China.

“Where is French democracy?” said the banner unfurled by the demonstrators, as Macron addressed a large number of students who had gathered in a theater in The Hague, Netherlands, on Tuesday (11/4) local time.

Macron is facing his biggest challenge yet in his second term as French prime minister, after pushing for pension reforms that included a policy of raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. The pension reform was rejected by a large part of the French public, triggering riotous demonstrations.

In The Hague, demonstrators who interrupted Macron’s speech stood on the balcony of the theater shouting: “You have millions of demonstrators in the streets.”

The demonstrators also held banners reading ‘President of Violence and Hypocrisy’ aimed at Macron.

After security guards cleared the demonstrators, Macron said that those who seek to undermine the rule of law passed by the elected government are “endangering democracy,” alluding to the 2021 storming of the United States’ Capitol Building and the attack on Brazil’s Congress in 2020. This.
