French Film Anatomy of a Fall Dominates César Awards with 6 Wins, Highlighting Issue of Sexual Violence

The French César awards were dominated by the justice drama Anatomy of a Fall. It won six statuettes including Best Film and Best Director for author Justine Triet. She won in the category as only the second woman. She thus followed up on the success of the Cannes festival, where she was the third woman to receive the Palme d’Or award last year.

According to the AFP agency, however, the most important moments of Friday’s César awards ceremony did not concern films, but the issue of sexual violence.

“I would like to dedicate this César to all women. Those who succeeded and those who failed, those who were harmed and freed themselves by speaking out in public, as well as those who could not,” said 45-year-old Justine Triet.

Actress Adèle Exarchopoulos won the Best Supporting Actress statuette for her portrayal of an incest victim in a drama I will always see your faces. Then her colleague Anna Mouglalis addressed the audience. She accused the French directors Jacques Doillon and Philippe Garrel of sexual rape. “If we pull together, we can change the world for the better,” she appealed to those present.

Actress Judith Godrèche, a leading figure in France’s #MeToo movement against sexual harassment, earned even more attention. The 51-year-old woman also accused Jacques Doillon, as well as director Benoît Jacquot, of abusing her as a minor. Both deny guilt.

The actress living in the USA has now condemned the “level of impunity and denial” in the industry at the César Awards. “We will not allow this art that we love so much and that unites us to be used as a cover for the illegal trafficking of young girls,” she exclaimed to a massive standing ovation.

During the 49th presentation of the Césars, the creators of Anatomy of a Fall experienced this repeatedly. The film tells the story of a writer facing suspicions of whether she killed her husband. The film successively received prizes for the screenplay for Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, as well as the award for best actress, which went to the German Sandra Hüller.

British director Christopher Nolan, author of last year’s Hollywood Oppenheimer, received an honorary César. He was introduced to the stage by Marion Cotillard, who acted in his films Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.

The ceremony was held at the Olympia concert hall in Paris. Around a hundred people demonstrated outside in support of victims of sexual violence, AFP adds.

Anatomy of a Fall has already won a Golden Globe and a statuette from the European Film Academy. He also has several Oscar nominations.

Since 1976, the Césaries have been awarded by the French Film Academy. They are named after the creator of the bronze trophy, the sculptor César Baldaccini. Last year, the drama Noc 12. was a success, and Michaela Pavlátová won the statuette for the best feature-length animated film for Moje slunce Mad.
