Freiburg will get a drive-in from next week – Freiburg

It took a lot longer than elsewhere, but now it works: Freiburg will get a drive-in cinema next week. There should be space for 400 cars on the exhibition center.

A drive-in cinema will open at the Freiburg trade fair next Monday. Cinema films such as the “Knguru Chronicles” or “The Joker” and much more will then be shown on a 16 by 9 meter LED screen. Children’s and family films are also planned in the mornings and afternoons. The open-air “cinema hall” will be set up on the area between Messehalle 1 and the new FWTM building and will accommodate 400 cars, as Thorsten Klein from the organizing company Malecon reports. The event technology company has been a contractual partner of the fair for years.

The whole project was “shot from the middle,” said Klein. But: it is running. The preparations are in full swing. The Friedrichsbau- / Harmoniekinos are responsible for the film program. With their summer night cinema series in the inner courtyard of the Black Monastery, they have many years of open-air experience.

Malecon has already been working on the Freiburg cinema project for four weeks. The first inquiries had been canceled. In the town hall, one hears the question of how and whether a drive-in cinema fits into a bicycle city and green city. Council groups are said to have hesitated at first. But now there was green light. And even Mnster, the even bigger bike town, has long had a drive-in cinema.

With the cancellation of the spring fair, the way for the cinema was clear

There was also another sticking point: Messe Freiburg first had to be clear about what was going to happen with the spring fair. The should have started on May 15, but was finally canceled last week due to the corona restrictions. This means that the drive-in cinema can occupy a part of the area that was otherwise used for bumper cars and the like. “We are certain that the offer will be well received – and will be able to offer people a program as an alternative to staying at home,” says exhibition manager Daniel Strowitzki about the drive-in project.

As in other cities, the drive-in operation is provided contactless, according to organizer Thorsten Klein. Tickets can only be bought online in advance. Snacks are also sold by pre-order, the goods are placed in front of the car. There is also a solution for the sound of the film: it is transmitted to the car radio in a neighborhood-friendly manner via the VHF frequency, which has to be applied for.

In theory, even more spectators would have fitted their cars onto the site. But Malecon wanted to leave it at 400 seats: “You can also handle the rush well,” says managing director Klein. The cinema should definitely be in operation by the end of August. There is an option for an extension.
