The number of unemployed in the district of the Freiburg Employment Agency hardly changed in December. As of the reporting date, a total of 12,595 women and men were unemployed in the city of Freiburg and the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen. That is 29 people more than a month earlier. The unemployment rate is unchanged at 3.4 percent. For women and men under the age of 25, the rate remains at 2.0 percent. While unemployment has increased in rural areas, especially in the weather and season-dependent professions, the Christmas business in and around Freiburg once again provided some relief.
“In the persistent health crisis, the labor market is still a rock. I don’t see that this situation will change at the start of the new year, ”says the chairman of the management board of the Freiburg Employment Agency, Andreas Finke. The fact that significantly more companies are reporting short-time work in December due to the Corona restrictions does not change the generally positive assessment for the time being. Because the companies not only secure employment. “They are still desperately looking for skilled workers and we are looking for solutions to avoid bottlenecks,” says Finke. In the second year of the pandemic, the number of reported jobs rose by 27.2 percent. 86 percent would be aimed at skilled workers. The high demands placed on future job holders also explain why long-term unemployed people find it so difficult to benefit from the good labor market situation. While unemployment fell by a total of almost 2,600 people in the past twelve months, the number of long-term unemployed rose again by 96 in the same period. “Bringing these people back to the primary labor market is hard work. Qualification is also important here, but it is not enough on its own. To be successful, you also need courage, creative ideas, perseverance and strong will on all sides, ”says Finke. For the coming month, Finke expects a noticeable increase in unemployment. However, it will have purely seasonal reasons.
Short-time work
According to preliminary figures, the Freiburg Employment Agency registered 266 advertisements for a total of 2,695 people in December.

The first projections for short-time work actually used in August 2021 are now available for the agency district. According to this, 952 companies accounted for short-time work for a total of 4,283 employees. The short-time work rate was 1.6 percent in August after 2.4 percent in July.

Dynamics on the labor market
3,034 people registered as unemployed in the reporting period. 3,000 people ended their unemployment in the same period.
Structure of the unemployed
Within a year, the number of unemployed has fallen in almost all target groups. The long-term unemployed are an exception, the number of which rose sharply during the pandemic and who have so far benefited little from the recovery. However, their increase is now less than in previous months. According to legal circles, the following picture emerges: SGB III: 5,420 unemployed (share 43.0 percent), SGB II: 7,175 unemployed (share 57.0 percent).
Labor demand
The demand for labor remains at a high level. The companies reported 1,295 vacancies. That is 120 or 10.2 percent more than in November and 242 or 23.0 percent more than a year ago. The greatest demand by industry: health and social services (243 jobs), professional, scientific and technical services (214), manufacturing (181), public administration (167), business-related services (135, including 99 from temporary employment), trade (127). In mid-December, the Freiburg Employment Agency received 5,715 orders to fill vacancies (84 percent for skilled workers, experts and specialists, 16 percent for helpers).
Development by region
Unemployment has changed little in all regions of the agency district.
