The fire brigade of the Freiburg fire brigade was alerted at 8.18 a.m. to smoke from a ventilation pipe in a sewage pipe in the building of the diaconal hospital in Landwasser.
The investigation revealed that the smoke was generated in the clinic’s sewage system.
To find the cause, the energy provider badenova and a private pipe cleaning company with sewer cameras were called in to help. With these cameras it was possible to find out that a smoldering object in the sewage pipe must have been the cause of this smoke development.
After opening another inspection opening (cleaning piece) in the sewage pipe, no further smoke was found in the sewage system.
The responsible staff at the diaconal hospital were asked to continue to monitor and control the situation. A specialist company is also supposed to check the sewage pipes.
As of now, there is no danger. The fire service carries out another check.
In parallel to the assignment in the diaconal hospital, the Freiburg fire department had to perform four more assignments: One was a door opening. The forces were called to small fire operations twice. Once again, the message was “stuck person in a ventilation shaft two meters deep”. However, no measures were necessary at the place of action because the person could be released before the arrival.
