New York consistently ranks among the most expensive cities in the United States. Fortunately, there are plenty of free tours, outdoor activities, and cultural attractions. Here are a few :

  • The city’s museums are always free, or at least free on certain days of the week or at certain times. Please note that some exhibitions and / or special events may require fees.
  • The Gold Vault of the Federal Bank of New York (financial district). This 1920 building contains 6,500 tonnes of gold, much of which arrived after World War II. Free visit of the safe on weekday afternoons.

  • The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, located northeast of Prospect Park, is free on weekdays, December 1 through the end of February.
  • The Flatiron / 23rd Street Partnership offers free walking tours of the historic Flatiron District. Tours run Sundays at 11 a.m. at the southwest corner of Madison Square Park, located on the corner of 23rd Street and Broadway. 1.5-hour walk, with stops at sites such as the MetLife Clock Tower, the New York Life Insurance Building and, of course, the famous Flatiron.
  • The High Line, the famous elevated park invites to beautiful free walks.

  • The art galleries in Chelsea, located between 14th and 29th streets and 10th and 11th avenues, offer museum-quality exhibits. On opening nights, wine or beer are offered free of charge.
  • The Grand Central Terminal. Every Friday at 12:30 p.m., a 90-minute guided tour offers tours of this huge station and its secrets, including the Whispering Gallery.
