France’s government cuts main dispute over pension reform

The French government is ready to forego the most controversial point in its planned pension reform. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe wrote to the unions and employer organizations in a letter to the AFP news agency that he was ready to remove the gradual increase in the retirement age to 64 from 2027 by 2027. Strikes and protests have been going on in France for weeks because of pension plans.

By refraining from the higher retirement age, he wanted to show his “trust” to the social partners, Philippe said in the letter. The influential CGT union and others are calling for a complete withdrawal of the reform plans that President Emmanuel Macron wants to unify the complicated system with more than 40 pension funds. The government categorically rejects this.

Demonstrations against pension reform were repeated in several French cities. In Paris, masked or masked demonstrators threw window panes on Saturday afternoons and threw objects at the police. The police used tear gas.
