France Announces Plans for New Gendarmerie Brigades and Increased Police Officers

It is a moment eagerly awaited by the territories. This Monday, in Tonneins, during a presidential trip, the state will announce the locations of new gendarmerie brigades. By 2027, there will be 2,144 more police officers in France. The state wants a better “network” of the territory with these creations of brigades, and before making its copy, was very attentive to the neglected peri-urban zone, or to sectors experiencing a demographic explosion. There will be creation of fixed brigades, with construction of buildings to accommodate families, and lighter and less expensive structures, mobile brigades.

“This is a historic effort in the history of the gendarmerie” assures the Élysée which recalls that between 2007 and 2016, more than 500 territorial gendarmerie brigades closed in the country. Today there are 3,500 gendarmerie brigades in France.

In Charente-Maritime, four projects have been submitted:

Near La Rochelle, the project which was selected by the urban area is Dompierre-sur-mer. Land of more than 6000 m² is available in the ZAC of the station. An area necessary to construct buildings to accommodate the brigade but also to house 18 gendarmes and their families. A location with, (and these are requests from the specifications) close to schools, shops and in case of intervention, quick access to the national 11 and the departmental 107. Aunis is in full demographic expansion , For Guillaume Krabal, mayor of Dompierre-sur-Mer, there is an understaffing of gendarmes for the Nieul-sur-Mer brigade: “generally it is one gendarme per 1000 inhabitants, here we are rather on one gendarme per 1800 inhabitants“. A statistic which could go in the direction of the creation of a brigade in the east of the agglomeration. St Sulpice was also in the running, but it was ultimately the project of the municipality of the mayor of Breuillet Jacques Lys which was proposed. Saint Hilaire de Villefranche near St Jean d’Angely also hopes to set up a brigade, on the exit of the town, next to departmental road 150, land is ready just before the St Hilaire pharmacy. A major road route towards Saintes, important in the event of rapid intervention. Montlieu la Garde is also in this list of municipalities which would like to be able to welcome a new brigade, but no large permanent structure for Montlieu La Garde. The project has a good chance of being accepted, but for the establishment of a mobile brigade.

Finally, in Charente, it seems that the creation of a mobile brigade Cherves Richemont either in the pipeline to cover the entire north of the Cognac metropolitan area. We also talk about a brigade fixed near Angoulême.
