Fourth suspect arrested for Blankenberge fight

A minor from Brussels has been arrested in connection with the fight last Saturday in Blankenberge. The public prosecutor’s office reports this.

The boy is the fourth suspect to be arrested. He has yet to be questioned, his exact role is still unclear.

On Saturday, three members of a Brussels youth gang were arrested for their part in the riots. The investigating judge decided on Monday that they would be temporarily detained and appear in court on Friday. They are suspected of deliberate assault and battery and armed rebellion.

The three admitted to acquainting themselves but, according to their statements, did not come to the coast together. They also said they are not part of a youth gang, but according to police records, all three do. The trio turns out to be a solid one filled criminal record to dispose of.

A total of twenty people were arrested on Saturday. All of them are Brussels residents aged between 17 and 21, many would be known in the capital for acts including violence, beatings and injuries, libel, vandalism and armed rebellion.

No space ban for the time being

The issue was discussed in the federal parliament this afternoon. According to Minister of the Interior Pieter De Crem (CD&V) there was enough police everywhere on the coast last weekend, but time was lost in Blankenberge to prevent riots. He favors it issue a ban on placesmaking amok makers no longer welcome on the coast or in recreational areas. But there would be no more such a ban this summer.
