The FBI on Thursday arrested and indicted four current and former police officers for their roles in the sensational shooting in Louisville, Kentucky, in which a black woman was killed in 2020.

Unarmed Breonna Taylor (26) was shot dead during a drug raid on her home. According to US Attorney General Merrick Garland, three of the four officers, Kyle Meany, Joshua Jaynes and Kelly Goodlett, are accused of knowingly using false information to obtain the search warrant for Taylor’s home. The fourth indicted, former Detective Brett Hankinson, has been charged with civil rights violations for allegedly using excessive force, Garland said Thursday.

The death of Taylor, who works as an emergency medical technician in her hometown, was one of three cases leading to global outbreaks in 2020 Black Lives Matter-protesten against racism and police brutality. One of those other cases was the death of George Floyd.

Ten shots
Taylor was in bed unarmed when officers broke into her home at night without warning. The police were looking for her ex-boyfriend. Her new boyfriend fired a shot because he thought there was a break-in. An officer was injured. The police then fired back. Hankinson fired ten shots because he thought his colleagues were under heavy fire. Taylor was touched by eight bullets.

Taylor’s next of kin had filed a civil lawsuit against the city of Louisville. This was settled and the family received a compensation of 12 million dollars (converted 10.9 million euros). Police reforms were also promised, including stricter search warrant rules.

Brett Hankinson, now indicted, was arrested in March this year acquitted in the only lawsuit involving Breonna Taylor. The 45-year-old former cop was not prosecuted for her death, but for endangering her neighbors. The white man in his forties was on trial because his bullets hit another house in the apartment complex.

Hankinson will fired in June 2020. The other two colleagues involved in the drama were transferred.
