Four people were killed in the collapse of a building in Lagos

Four people died and three were rescued on Friday when a three-story building collapsed in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, emergency services said.

Episodes of building collapses are frequent in the most populous African country, where many live in dilapidated buildings that do not comply with safety regulations.

“Four bodies of two men and two women were recovered and delivered to the morgue,” said Olofemi Oki-Osanintolo of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

He revealed that three people were rescued after being trapped under the rubble of the apartment building in the city’s Mushin neighborhood, which is home to over 20 million people.

He said the injured were taken to hospital while search and rescue operations are still ongoing.

Construction disasters in Nigeria are often attributed to lack of perfection, poor materials and corruption.-
