Four people die from food poisoning

Four residents of an EHPAD located in Pleine-Fougères, Brittany, lost their lives, and 37 other people, including a staff member, were seriously affected by probable food poisoning.

These victims suffered from severe digestive symptoms, including profuse diarrhea, highlighting a health crisis within the EHPAD.

Food poisoning with serious consequences

On November 10, the management of the Pleine-Fougères EHPAD recognized the food origin of the poisoning.

The duration of hospitalization of the last victim, who died after ten days of suffering, underlines the seriousness of the incident and the responsibility of the management of the EHPAD, is strongly questioned.

A victim’s family has already filed a complaint and a judicial investigation has been opened.

A judicial investigation is underway

The seriousness of the situation led the Saint-Malo prosecutor, Fabrice Tremel, to announce a judicial investigation into involuntary manslaughter and involuntary injuries.

This investigation is being carried out jointly by the Saint-Malo Research Brigade, the Central Office for Combating Environmental and Public Health Attacks, and the National Veterinary and Phytosanitary Investigation Brigade.

The Departmental Directorate for Population Protection (DDPP) was responsible for analyzing the dishes served at the EHPAD that day.

A town in shock and many questions…

While the town of Pleine-Fougères is in mourning, questions remain unanswered.

The exact contents of the menu served that day remain unknown, and the impact of this tragedy on family relationships in the commune is palpable. This incident raises major concerns about food safety in establishments serving vulnerable people, and highlights the need for stronger public health oversight and regulation.
