Four Hispanic Transgender Women Tell How Quarantine Has Challenged Them | Univision Coronavirus News

The transgender community is among the most affected by the pandemic. In fact, Lorena Borja, one of the most prominent Mexican transgender activists in the fight for the rights of her group, died in late March of causes linked to covid-19. In addition to the discrimination they still suffer due to their identity, the coronavirus has brought other problems that harm their physical and mental health.

“Transgender people have been greatly affected by confinement. Many have lost their jobs and have had to move with transphobic family members, ”according to Red Washburn, an English teacher at Kingsborough Community College specializing in LGBTQ issues and gender studies. This pandemic, Washburn adds, is revealing the injustices and frequent assaults that trans people experience.

According to the testimonies shared by four women, since the beginning of the quarantine in the United States, the clinics where they routinely undergo routine medical check-ups for their transition process have closed. The psychological care that accompanies that process has also been modified: now it is only by phone. Since many cannot leave the house so often, they cannot go to stock up on the medicines necessary for their process. And for others, instead, the pandemic has forced them to return to the home of their parents, who still do not understand their sex-generic identity.

This story was made possible by one of them writing to This formulary that made available Univision News and ProPublica to learn how coronavirus affects the Hispanic community. We have also answered the questions that have come to us and you can check here.
