The body of Mattia Lucaroni was found this afternoon in a meadow in the Italian town of Trecastelli. The 8-year-old child disappeared a week ago during the flood in the Marche region.

After more than eight days of searches, the body of Mattia Lucaroni was found this afternoon. In a meadow about 15 kilometers from where the boy disappeared, a farmer found a dead body covered in mud. Mattia became during the floods last week in the Italian region of Marchein the center of Italy on the Adriatic Sea, pulled by the water.

The body found this afternoon is in an advanced state of decomposition and therefore the DNA test is done to be sure, but given the clothing found on the body, hardly anyone doubts that it is the missing Mattia Lucaroni. His backpack, part of his sweater and his shoes were found earlier this week.

From his mother’s arms

Mattia was dragged from his mother’s arms by the force of the water during last week’s severe flooding. The woman managed to escape but the boy disappeared in the huge mudslide. The recovery of Mattia’s body brings the death toll of the flood to twelve and a 56-year-old woman is still missing.

More than 120 fire, police and civil defense teams have been searching for missing persons for more than a week.
