Researchers have identified a way to force pluripotent cells that can turn into any body tissue to transform into pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin. When the modified cells were transplanted into mice with severe diabetes, the condition of the animals quickly improved. Within two weeks, the level of glucose in the blood of rodents returned to normal and remained low for many months.

The new method reduces the number of side cells of other types formed from pluripotent cells. Together with beta cells, other pancreatic and liver cells are often formed that are not harmful, but also do not play a role in glucose control and limit the therapeutic effect of stem cells.
