Former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir Still Held in Military Hospital, Confirms Sudanese Police

(CNN) — The Sudanese police media office and informed sources told CNN, on Monday, that former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is still being held by the Sudanese Armed Forces in a military hospital in Omdurman, west of Khartoum.

Video clips circulated on social media, Sunday, showed prisoners leaving Kober prison after their release by the authorities amid the conflict in Sudan.

Al-Bashir was placed in Cooper prison in 2019, and sources said that the former Sudanese president was transferred to a hospital a year ago due to health problems.

Sudanese police confirmed on Monday that Bashir was still being held in hospital, and said the prisoners had already been released from prison on Sunday.

The media office of the Sudanese police told CNN, by phone, that “Al-Bashir is still in the hospital, and all the leaders of the former regime were evacuated from Kober prison before the release of other prisoners.”

Al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan for 3 decades before his overthrow in 2019, faces charges of genocide as well as war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

It is noteworthy that Omar al-Bashir is the first president to be issued an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court while he is in office, accusing him of committing the crime of genocide, according to the court’s website.
