The coach of the American gymnastics team, Olympic champion in 2012, John Geddert, committed suicide Thursday, February 25, hours after his indictment for “forced labor” and sexual assault on athletes at his Michigan club.

“My services have been notified that the body of John Geddert was found this afternoon after he committed suicide”, said on Twitter the Attorney General of this American state, Dana Nessel, regretting “the tragic end of a tragic story”.

The prosecutor had earlier in the day announced that the ex-trainer, 63, was being prosecuted for physical, verbal and sexual abuse of some 20 young women who were training at his Twistars club, near Lansing. It is in this club that worked the therapist Larry Nassar, the ex-doctor of the American gymnastics team at the heart of the biggest sex scandal in the sporting history of the United States.

John Geddert is also accused of having lied to the police, in particular by denying having knowledge of the sexual assaults committed by Larry Nassar on the gymnasts of his club. The latter, who sexually assaulted at least 265 identified victims over two decades, including several high-level gymnasts such as quadruple Olympic champion Simone Biles, was sentenced in three separate trials to cumulative sentences representing at least 140 years in prison.
