Former Italian footballer Gianluca Vialli dies aged 58 in a London hospital

Former Italian footballer Gianluca Vialli died on Friday at the age of 58 in a London hospital from pancreatic cancer he had suffered for five years. On 14 December he had to leave his post as head of delegation of the Italian national football team.

The Italian Football Federation confirmed his death in a statement last night and assured that he will “never forget” his legacy.

Cremonese by birth, Vialli, a center forward, began his career at Cremonese in 1980 and after four seasons moved to Sampdoria (1984), a team where he worked with the blue coach Roberto Mancini. The two formed a friendship that went beyond the playing fields and made history by winning the only ‘Scudetto’ that the Genoese club keeps in its record in 1991, as well as three Italian Cups in 1985, 1988 and 1989 and an Italian Super Cup in 1991.
