Endocrinologist Riccardo Giorgino, an Andriese but for decades in Bari, where, for 64 years, he was professor of Endocrinology at the School of Medicine of the University of Bari ‘Aldo Moro’ passes away at the age of 88; brother of the lawyer Antonio Giorgino and uncle of the journalist Francesco and the former mayor Nicola Giorgino. «Endocrinology at the University of Bari was officially born as an autonomous discipline in the early sixties of the last century. One of the first courses established in Italy. A story that largely coincides with the personal one of prof. Riccardo Giorgino ». This is what we read in the preface of the volume “The history of Endocrinology in the University of Bari (1963-2008) published by the same University in 2020 and signed by Professor Riccardo Giorgino who on June 23 would have turned 88 years, 64 of which dedicated (yes he reads in the dedication of the book with the Presentation of the Magnificent Rector Stefano Bronzini) “to my students”.

After graduating from the “La Sapienza” University, prof. Riccardo Giorgino specializes in Internal Medicine in Bari, then also in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, and Gerontology and Geriatrics.

During his long academic career, prof. Giorgino has held positions of great prestige. In 2008, on the proposal of the Academic Senate of the University of Bari, the Minister for Research appointed him Professor Emeritus of Medical Clinic ”. But he was also director of the School of Specialization of Endocrinology, delegate of the Rector for the Schools of Specialization of the Medical Area of ​​the University of Bari, President of the Italian Society of Endocrinology and of the Italian Society of Diabetology and Vice President of the Mediterranean Group for the Study of Diabetes.

Important scientific contributions are due to him: as editor of prestigious international journals and coordinator of research projects on diabetes and diabetic diseases. The scientific production is very rich, evidenced by over 300 publications including textbooks, original works, reviews, in all sectors of the cultural sphere of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, witnessed by an H Index equal to 40.

The professor. Giorgino also held positions of institutional responsibility at the University of Bari: Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and of the Center for the Study and Treatment of Diabetes; Director of the Institute of Medical Clinic, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases; Director of the Section of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Andrology and Metabolic Diseases of the Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation; Director of the School of Specialization in Endocrinology and Replacement Diseases; Director of the University Diploma Course in Dietology and Applied Dietetics, President of the Degree Course in Dietetics.

The professor was particularly proud of his multi-year Direction of the scientific journal “Il Diabete”, the official organ of the Italian Diabetes Society. “An activity of high dissemination and cultural promotion, carried out nationally and internationally” thanks to which the School of Endocrinology led by prof. Giorgino has left an indelible mark on Medicine at an international level.

With a touching omen – as the same prof. Giorgino in the conclusion of his preface of the book which is a real testament: the journey continues and I am sure that, thanks to those who have collected this inheritance, he will reach more shining goals ».

The funeral will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 26 May, at 5 pm in the church of San Giovanni Battista in Bari.
