Forgotten Studies: Ford X-100 (1953)

Manufacturers often bring out cars that show their new design line, which we then call “Halo Car”. These models are not only distinguished by their design, but above all by their technology. And so it was also in 1953. Although we find that the Ford X-100 also takes a step forward.

The X-100 was supposed to represent Ford’s future and had a very modern and stylish design for the time. The model, already a favorite at the 1952 Chicago Auto Show, managed to attract attention with its two-tone paintwork. But the X-100, which according to Ford is a “workshop on wheels“was, contains the real surprises.

Because of course the design, which later led to the Ford Thunderbird in a similar form, isn’t the only detail that makes the X-100 so special. The model has exactly 50 different features which, according to Ford, were the first to be found in a vehicle at the time. Sounds strange at first, right? And it gets even more fun. Because one of these “equipment” is, for example, a razor in the glove compartment …

So yes, it is possible to shave inside the X-100. The studio, which began life as the Lincoln Continental 1950X, was also equipped with less extravagant features.

For example, there was some kind of rain sensor. A moisture-sensitive roof cell has ordered the plastic roof to close automatically in case of rain. We remember that we are in the 50s.

It is said that Henry Ford II liked the model so much that he wanted it as a symbol of Ford’s future. The model also graced the cover of Ford’s 50th anniversary brochure. Today the vehicle is still preserved and is in the museum. Can you still shave? We do not know.
