Forbach. A stele in recognition of organ donors inaugurated at the hospital

Transplant recipients never forget their donor

Members of associations such as France Adot 57 and SOS globi were present during this inauguration. Bernard Kirch (Adot 57), a heart transplant recipient, said that a transplant recipient never forgets his donor, even if the latter is anonymous: “It is our heroes who have allowed us to live. Other transplant recipients testified in front of the stele. Like Dorothée, who had a bone marrow transplant at the age of 29 following leukemia: “Without the donation, I would not be in front of you and I would not have been able to see my loved ones grow up like my godson. Today I’m fine. “

Samples of other tissues under study in Forbach

At the Forbach hospital, only corneas are collected from the eye. The organ donation coordination team at Marie-Madeleine Hospital recorded a record of 21 donations in 2019. This year, seven donations were carried out. The Covid crisis has put a brake on donations but activity seems to be picking up encouragingly. “The collected cornea is sent to a tissue bank in Nancy. After tests, it is implanted in a hospital in Nancy, Metz or Strasbourg. We are currently studying the possibility of extending our sampling specialty to other tissues such as the epidermis, veins or heart valves ”, explain Nathalie Kopp, healthcare manager, as well as Vanessa Loudcher and Céline Majewski, senior nurses.

The mission of Marie-Madeleine’s coordination team is also to identify post-mortem organ donors and to organize their transfer from Forbach to authorized centers in the region for transplantation. “On average, we organize three donation chains per year from our hospital,” concludes Céline Majewski.
