Football: From Mediamarkt to FC Barcelona: Adios, Ingolstadt

From Ingolstadt to FC Barcelona: A big step in football. The previous Mediamarkt boss Ferran Reverter Planet will head the Catalans’ business in the future.

Ferran Reverter Planet’s career path took him past refrigerators, kettles and full HD televisions. In October 2018, the Catalan finally made it to the top. After 16 years at MediamarktSaturn, the now 48-year-old became CEO of Europe’s largest electronics chain and thus head of more than 50,000 employees worldwide. After six years in Ingolstadt he is now going back to Catalonia.

The ex-boss of Mediamarkt Saturn is returning to his homeland

In the future, however, his eyes will almost exclusively be on eleven men chasing a ball on the green lawn of the legendary Camp Nou for a lot of money. Because Reverter Planet says “Adios” to the company headquarters in Ingolstadt and is returning to where he was born in 1972: to Barcelona. He prematurely terminated his contract in June and will then become CEO of the FC Barcelona. The club where he is supposed to have a season ticket and where one of his three children also plays in a youth team.

Reverter Planet on FC Barcelona: “This chance only exists once in a lifetime”

“To have the chance to play a decisive role in shaping the future of what is perhaps the largest and most famous club in the world, and that in my hometown, where my family lives – this opportunity only exists once in a lifetime,” said Reverter Planet in a press release from Ceconomy, the parent company of MediamarktSaturn, quoted. The 48-year-old also has an economy in Barcelona. How fantastic the new job will be for him remains to be seen, however.

FC Barcelona has had a new boss since Monday

Because FC Barcelona is in one of the biggest crises in the club’s history. Since Monday, the club has also had a new club boss in Joan Laporta – and Ferran Reverter Planet, in a sense, has a new boss again. With Laporta, who led the club to many titles and financial stability between 2003 and 2010, fans are hoping for better days.

FC Barcelona: Hopes are growing that Lionel Messi will stay with the club

Even the hope that the emigrant superstar Lionel Messi but could stay with the Catalans beyond the season now seems realistic again. Laporta probably won the top club’s election because of the promise that he would quickly talk the Argentine, whose contract expires on June 30th, all thoughts of change. “I’ll solve that at a barbecue party,” the 58-year-old had assured only three days before the vote.

While Messi is supposed to ensure success on the field, the new signing from Ingolstadt is unlikely to be noticed by most Barca fans. How important it is not only to have the best kickers, but also a solid balance sheet, was what the financially troubled club had to learn recently. In this respect, the new signing from Upper Bavaria is perhaps just as important for Barcelona as the services of Lionel Messi.
