Freiburg (dpa) – The extraordinary time of Christian Streich as coach of SC Freiburg continues. One day after his 55th birthday, the longest-serving coach in the Bundesliga was able to look forward to his official contract extension with the Badeners. “It is an exceptional situation. I enjoy it extremely,” said Streich on Friday.
Streich has been training the Breisgau team since December 2011, and the former youth coach has been working for the club since 1995. Most recently, Streich had extended the Freiburg team in February 2019. As usual, the sports club made no statements about the term of the new contract.
“It was a matter of course for me to continue. We have the agreement that we will continue to work together until someone says I don’t want it anymore – either the club or me,” said Streich. “If we continue to get along so well and don’t lose so often, I hope it will go on for a long time.” Negotiations were “not necessary”.
The sport club is currently in eighth place and plays for VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday (3.30 p.m. / Sky) for the chance to qualify for the Europa League. The Breisgauers already have the goal of staying in the league.
In the fast-moving Bundesliga business, continuity at SC Freiburg in the coaching position is exceptional. He “admires” coaches who often change club and place of residence, said Streich and cited Hertha coach Bruno Labbadia as an example. “I think I couldn’t have done it,” said the 55-year-old. “I don’t think I could have brought up this discipline.”
