The creation of ‘superblocks’ in Palma would free up 70 percent of the space occupied by vehicles | Radio Mallorca | Balearic Hour 14

The creation of ‘superblocks’ in Palma would free up 70 percent of the space currently occupied by vehicles. It is the opinion of Salvador Ruera, who has been director of the Barcelona Urban Ecology Agency for almost two decades. He is the creator of these urban cells where the pedestrian is the one who has preference, areas where vehicles can circulate only at 10 kilometers per hour.

Rueda is committed to giving priority to residents, so that children can play on the street, reduce polluting emissions and noise levels, and free up spaces that until now were occupied by cars.

The Palma City Council has taken an interest in this design in order to develop it in Son Busquets. Rueda believes that everything is an advantage and that after years applying this measure in some parts of the city of Barcelona, specifically 503 ‘superblocks’, the result is positive, even for commerce, which predicted losses due to the elimination of vehicles in area.

Salvador Rueda, who has passed through the SER microphones, is debating this Thursday about the possibilities offered by the former Son Busquets headquarters. The appointment is at the College of Architects of the Islands at seven in the afternoon.
