Hana Horka, a Czech singer who was part of the folk group Asonance, has died of Covid-19 at the age of 57. Horka, who had not been vaccinated, had contracted the disease deliberately, according to her son.

When her son Jan Rek and her husband became infected with the corona virus during the Christmas holidays, Hana Horka normally had to isolate herself from them for a week. “But she didn’t, she stayed with us all the time,” her son testified BBC News. “She preferred to expose herself to the virus, even though she was not vaccinated. Then she’d be done with it, she said. And she could again move more freely in the land (In the Czech Republic, proof of vaccination or of a recent infection is required to access many social and cultural venues, ed.).”

Two days before her death, Horka wrote on social media that she was recovering from Covid-19 and that she was doing well. “Soon, finally back to the theater, to the sauna, to concerts…”, she wrote.

Even on the day she died, a Sunday morning, she initially still felt well. She had even prepared to go for a walk, but then her back suddenly started to hurt and she decided to go to bed for a while. “After about ten minutes it was all over,” said her son. “She choked.”
Although Horka – unlike her husband and her son – was not vaccinated, she also did not believe in the conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccines, says her son, who is now trying to convince others to get vaccinated against the virus. “Her philosophy was that she would rather have Covid-19 than a syringe,” he says. “That has now become fatal to her.”
