Focus announces the acquisition of Deck13, the studio of The Surge – News

Not scalded by the discreet commercial reception of The Surge 2, Focus therefore acquired the German studio Deck13 Interactive for the sum of 7.1 million euros. Employing 60 people, the studio had turnover of 5.5 million euros in 2019, says Focus. “We are very pleased to welcome the Deck13 teams and look forward to working together to achieve our ambitious goals. This acquisition marks an important step in our history of growth and will strengthen our economic model. This acquisition will be financed thanks to the drawing of part of the new bank financing of 46 million euros which will also feed our other future developments.“said Jürgen Goeldner, Chairman of the Management Board.

By acquiring Deck13 Interactive, which we also know for Lords of the Fallen, Focus confirms the maintenance and even the future growth of the label Deck13 Spotlight, the pole of independent games publication which provides many services to studios ( production, localization, quality assurance, marketing, public relations and distribution). Good news, because it is to Deck13 Spotlight that we owe the imminent release of CrossCode on consoles after a complicated porting process.

In addition to this acquisition, which should call on others since it only marks the deployment of the “Enhance-Evolve-Explore” strategic plan, Focus released its economic results for the annual year ended March 31, 2020, posting growth of 13 % for turnover, 36% for operating profit and 64% for net profit. Focus cites the successes of World War Z, GreedFall and A Plague Tale: Innocence but also the good performance of the back-catalog. Focus was also driven by the growth in digital sales, which represented 82% of its turnover over the year compared to 66% for the previous year. Despite these very good results, the group’s net debt remains at the same level as last year (- 18 million euros) due to the increase in game development budgets.

Farming Simulator: love will no longer be in the meadow

The group also recalls having 27 titles in development and maintains its growth objectives for the coming years (the management aims for a turnover of between 150 and 200 million euros in 2022) and this despite the will of Giants Software to publish the next Farming Simulator, which will certainly have an impact on the business of Focus as the agricultural franchise has long been one of its most important sources of income. Focus is therefore focusing on its other projects and will soon unveil the fruit of its partnership with Sumo Digital (“an online cooperative game in an ultra-violent fantasy universe“) as well as the next Limestone Games title. Two Warhammer games will also be unveiled soon: a tactical game developed in Canada by Gasket Games and an action game developed by the French from StreumOn Studio.
