The first doses of flu vaccine for the 2023-2024 season have arrived in pharmacies in Romania. Viatris quadrivalent influenza vaccine is part of the National Immunization Program and contains the influenza strains selected by the WHO for use in influenza vaccines for the 2023-2024 season.

The recommended time for flu vaccination is in September or October, which are the best times to get vaccinated for most people.

Flu vaccination in July and August is not recommended for most people, but there are some considerations for vaccination in these months for certain groups of people:

For adults (especially those aged 65 years and older) and for first- and second-trimester pregnant women, vaccination in July and August should be avoided unless vaccination in September will not be possible or October. Pregnant women who are in their third trimester can get the flu shot in July or August to make sure their babies are protected from the flu after birth, when they are too young to be vaccinated. Children who need two doses of the flu vaccine should receive the first dose of the vaccine as soon as the vaccine becomes available. The second dose should be given at least four weeks after the first. Vaccination is recommended as long as flu viruses are a threat. In some seasons this can be as late as May or June.

The strains that will go into the tetravalent flu vaccines for next season should contain:

· A/Victoria/4897/2022 (H1N1)pdm09 – similar strain;

· A/Darwin/9/2021 (H3N2) – similar strain;

· B/Austria/1359417/2021 (line B/Victoria) – similar strain;

· B/Phuket/3073/2013 (B/Yamagata line) – similar strain.

It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to be most effective, which is why it’s recommended to get vaccinated in the fall, before flu season starts.
