Flu, rush to the vaccine, but the doses will not be enough

double the race for the vaccine. On the one hand, the giants of research are scrambling to find that anti-Covid (when will it arrive, really at the end of the year?). On the other, governments elbow to grab the vials offlu which does not protect against Sars-CoV-2 but can prevent the two infectious diseases from overlapping and confusing the diagnosis. It is easy to imagine the stress to which health systems will be subjected when in the winter months the cause of fever and cough can be attributed to both diseases.

Out of stock

This is why the European Commission among the strategies for the Member States has indicated the fight against the flu to be implemented by anticipating vaccination campaigns and expanding the population groups to be immunized. There is a problem. The pharmaceutical industries will not be able to meet the demands and the supply of doses may prove insufficient. This prospect is far from remote given that already in the previous season stocks in certain areas have run out. success also in Italy, a country that does not shine in joining vaccination campaigns (just 15% of citizens answer the call).

In Italy

Companies have been encouraged to double their production and as much as they are committed to speeding up times, they won’t make it. US companies aim to have 189 million syringes ready against the 170 million last year. The Ministry of Health published the circular with the reference indications for the Regions at the beginning of June. No obligation. The vaccine as always recommended e offered free to over 65, people of all ages at high risk of complications (ie with chronic diseases that are an additional risk factor also for Covid), health workers and employees of public services. Gratuitousness / voluntary service is extended for the first time to the 60-64 age group. The obligation is contemplated only for healthcare professionals who work in contact with patients and the elderly hospitalized in residential and long-term care facilities.

The Lazio line

A passage that would however require ad hoc laws. The circular stimulates the ASL to anticipate the vaccination campaigns in October and to make the doses available at any time, even to citizens who arrive late. And the Regions? Each goes its own way. In Lazio councilor Alessio D’Amato opts for the tax line and with an order signed by Zingaretti introduces the obligation for the over 65 (also offered the pneumococcal vaccine, responsible for forms of pneumonia) and health workers. For children from 6 months to 6 years of age the highly recommended flu shot while in Campania they choose to prick the little ones. In the USA, Canada and Great Britain it has also worked to protect the elderly from viruses.

Children and puncture

The Italian pediatric society of Lombardy wrote to President Attilio Fontana to move in the same direction. According to the High School of Economics and Management of Health Services (Altems) in mid-June only Lazio had already closed the tender for the purchase 2.5 million doses. It starts with the first inoculations on September 15th. Yesterday the governor of Campania De Luca spoke about a mass vaccination campaign. Emilia-Romagna will be ready to start at the beginning of October with 20% more doses (1 million 200 thousand), and a greater quantity could be added in case of need. In the 2019-2020 season just half of the over 65 have chosen to immunize themselves. The flu put about 7.6 million Italians to bed between November and May.
