Vaccination will not have a negative impact on the immune response
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, Seasonal flu symptoms are expected to be felt more severe than usual in the coming winter. The UK and other Northern Hemisphere countries are bracing for a difficult winter and a possible spike in flu cases due to the easing of the Covid-19 lockdown period.
This time a study showed that flu vaccine and Covid-19 are safe to be given even though at the same time. The study was led by the University of Bristol, and found that reported side effects were typically mild to moderate in testing with three flu vaccines and Pfizer’s or AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine. Giving the vaccine will not have a negative impact on the immune response if given at the same time.
“This is a very positive step that could mean fewer appointments for those who need both vaccines,” said lead researcher Rajeka Lazarus.
The results of the study have been presented to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) for their consideration and will assist policy makers in planning for the future of this important vaccination programme.
The injection on the same day can be given in a different arm. One group got a Covid-19 shot and a flu shot at the first visit, with a placebo given at the second visit. While the other group got the Covid-19 shot and a placebo was given on the same day, followed by the flu vaccine on the second day.
The study found 97 percent of participants said they would be willing to get two doses of the vaccine in the future. The study involved 679 volunteers at 12 sites across England and Wales, and was released as a pre-print, with full results to be published in the Lancet.
Injection booster Covid-19 is being given to the elderly and vulnerable, as well as health workers in the UK, while the government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson also promised the largest flu vaccination program in history this year.
