Florence, 27 September 2020 – The police have reported to the juvenile prosecutor’s office two little girlsi, alleged authors ofmalicious fire which caused the destruction of a dozen mopeds parked yesterday, Saturday afternoon, in the center of Florence, in piazza Davanzati. I’m a 17 year old and a 13 year old which is not yet attributable even if he will have to turn 14 in 2020.

The two are part of a small group of very young people, all minors, who have been staying in the square for about a couple of months in their free time. According to what is learned, the two denounced have been identified with the fixed camera footage. The mother of one of them, learned of what had happened from her son, immediately accompanied him yesterday to a barracks thus contributing to the investigations, which are still ongoing. For the police, the two reported are the material authors of the fire.

They would have disconnected the fuel pipe of at least one motorbike by pouring the fuel into the street, which was spread on the pavement, then with a lighter they set it on fire. The blaze destroyed the row of parked mopeds, damaged two cars and attacked the building that houses the Odeon cinema and the Yab Yum nightclub on the back.

The flammable liquid passed under a door that leads to a technical compartment of the room, a room where the flames attacked the electrotechnical equipment, then were extinguished by the firefighters after having broken through the door with clubs. On the opposite side of the square is Casa Davanzati, a state museum dedicated to a rare example of a medieval house which has survived intact to the present day and is a destination for visits, including school visits. Tourists witnessed the flames from the loggia. The fire was visible from all over the city, even from the suburbs, due to the column of thick black smoke that rose into the sky.
