Flooding on Carcavelos beach on a sunny day with suspended classes

The beach of Carcavelos, in the municipality of Cascais, was this Wednesday afternoon (March 11) full of people. Mostly young. The day was warm and sunny, inviting a swim in the sea and a few hours of exposure to the sun, on the sand. The good weather attracted people and not even the fact of experiencing a situation of generalized epidemic made the young people stay at home.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), temperatures in the Lisbon region reached 27º, a high value for this time of year.

The decision to close several colleges or to suspend face-to-face classes will have influenced this movement towards the beaches. Teaching activities are suspended at medical schools and the University of Lisbon has also suspended face-to-face classes, covering several colleges and institutes.

This Wednesday morning, the Portuguese Catholic University and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon followed this route and announced the suspension of face-to-face classes, to prevent the spread of the new covid-19 coronavirus.
