Fisker has given up solid-state batteries, he can’t finish them sensibly

Many people think that it should take only months from the discovery of a new type of battery to the introduction of mass production, but nothing could be further from the truth. This is beautifully illustrated by the example of society Fisker, which wanted to start production next year electric SUV Ocean with solid-state batteries. This would be remarkable, because even the best battery developers do not see a real deployment of solid-state technology before the end of this decade (at best in its second half). And in a recent interview with Henry Fisker, it really doesn’t seem that easy.

He said that their solid-state batteries are 90% ready, but in the end they found in Fisker that developing the remaining 10% is surprisingly much more complicated than the first 90% (basically the classic Pareto rule, but it is with its 80/20 ratio a little more merciful). But they only found out when they got to this point. He admitted that they were too optimistic and there was no chance to finish it reasonably. Although they have almost finished solid-state batteries, according to him, it is a technology that is still “very, very far”. He now sees that just endurance testing and the start of mass production will each require at least 3 years, so after inventing a new technology, it is a matter of at least 6 years, if not more.

Henry Fisker also joined Elon Musk. He decided to have his cars manufactured by Magna. According to him, it is somewhat ignorant to think that it is possible to build a factory in the desert, hire people, develop a brand new car and think that it is possible to be as good as a Volkswagen or Toyota. Magna produced cars for BMW or Toyota, for example, for example the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra.
