First Successful Hand Transplant Operation in Delhi Gives Hope to Painter in India

Jakarta

A surgical team in India successfully performed a hand transplant operation on a 45 year old patient. The patient, who also works as a painter, lost his hand in a tragic accident. He was involved in a train accident in 2020.

Quoted from NDTV, the first bilateral hand transplant procedure in Delhi was carried out at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. This procedure was successfully carried out after they received an organ donation from a female patient.

This is certainly a hope for the painter to return to using his brush to create work. Moreover, he came from a poor family and was faced with a ‘dead end’.

The female patient who donated the organ was named Meena Mehta, a former head of administration at a leading school in south Delhi. Meena has been declared brain dead and during her lifetime has promised to give her organs to people in need.

Not only was the painter patient who received a hand organ, Meena has also saved three other patients who received organ donors. His kidneys, liver and corneas have now been given to other patients.

The transplant process was carried out through a long operation with a team of surgeons. This operation takes approximately 12 hours.

This operation is carried out by connecting tendons, arteries, muscles and nerves between the donor’s hand and the recipient’s hand. A long and complex process carried out by a team of surgeons finally succeeded in giving the patient his hands again.
