First Lady Emine Erdogan showcases Anatolian textiles to wives of state heads at Turkish House in New York

AA / New York / Mucahit Oktay

First Lady Emine Erdogan presented Anatolian textiles to the wives of heads of state she hosted at the Turkish House (Türkevi) in New York, where she visited on the occasion of the 78th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

Handicraft textile products produced in the maturation institutes of the Ministry of Education were displayed at the event.

Emine Erdogan said the world’s oldest weaving, 9,000 years old, was found during excavations in Çatalhöyük, in central Anatolia.

“The art that was once present in our homes now offers a visual feast in Renaissance paintings on display in museums around the world,” she said.

At the exhibition, Emine Erdogan introduced handmade textile products belonging to various regions in Anatolia one by one.

She pointed out that the “rarest examples” of “kemha” weaving, which Westerners call brocade, began to be woven much earlier in Bursa (northwest) and Amasra (north).

Emine Erdogan also explained that agents were looking for the colors and patterns of quality fabrics during the Ottoman period, and the first consumer laws were enacted in Istanbul.

She further noted that the Turks were able to weave waterproof tents back then, thousands of years before the invention of nanotechnology, without using synthetic products.

Furthermore, the First Lady stressed that ancient coloring techniques, with traditional materials and production methods, will reduce environmental pollution.

“Our textile industry is already an important player in global markets. We want to further strengthen our textile industry through the traditional weaves that we offer to global markets,” she continued.

The wives of the presidents of Kenya, Serbia, Albania, Croatia and North Macedonia were present at the event.

Impressed by the products on display, they expressed their praise for the Turkish textile industry and thanked Emine Erdogan for his contribution to the “Turkish Weaving Atlas” project.
