Fire escape with students collapses, HPV vaccination and extra gym class

Every Friday we close the week with a news overview in which we look back at what has happened in education. What were the most striking, interesting or most newsworthy items per working day this week?

Monday: Fire escape with students on it collapses

Two students were injured on Saturday evening after the fire escape of their student house in Leiden suddenly collapsed. The two students fell from a great height. They were taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

Tuesday: Fontys teachers leave because of controversial teaching method

Several lecturers at Fontys Hogeschool have left because of a new teaching method called High Impact Learning that Lasts (HILL). Students determine what they themselves need to find solutions to urgent social issues. But according to one of the teachers, this caused teachers to sit at home.

Wednesday: Theater maker Kitty wants to teach students not to postpone anything

Theater maker Kitty Trepels van Mil (59) experienced firsthand that ‘life can be short’. That is also her message to the medical students who came to see her play on Tuesday. “Whether you die of cancer or a heart attack, don’t put off anything in your life. Because it can suddenly be over.”

Thursday: More than 160,000 young adults have already made an appointment for HPV vaccination

More than 160,000 young adults between the ages of 19 and 27 made an appointment for a vaccination against HPV in recent weeks. Or they have already had the first injection.

Friday: Extra gym class good for health, but also very time consuming in Nijmegen

From the 2023-2024 school year, primary schools are required by law to provide PE lessons for at least 45 minutes twice a week. Not all schools do that now. This can cause problems in Nijmegen, because the gym is not located near the school and the road to it can be dangerous.
