Fire at Vard Shipyard Damages Coast Guard Ship “Hopen”

At the Vard shipyard, smoke billows from the coast guard ship “Hopen”.

– We know that the fire service is on the scene. There has been smoke development in one of our new buildings. This is what will become of the coast guard ship “Hopen”, says communications manager Anne-Bente Skjellum to NRK.

Just before 11 a.m. on Friday, the fire service reported that they had got the situation under control.

The fire brigades in Helland and Tomrefjord traveled to the shipyard after that the message was received by the 110 centre.

The extent of the fire is so far unclear. Vard also has no information so far about how extensive the damage is or what the consequences of what has happened are for the completion of the ship.

The fire service has started work to extinguish the fire in the boat.

– The fire started in the battery compartment. We still don’t know what caused the fire to start, says Tonny Åsen, at the 110 switchboard in Møre og Romsdal.

Evacuated

He says that the extinguishing work is challenging.

– The fire service has put out the fire, but struggle with new batteries that are next to each other starting to burn, says Åsen.

The ship is evacuated.

– The employees on board the ship were evacuated in connection with the fire, says operations manager in Møre and Romsdal police district Arild Reite.

Two people are checked by health personnel because they have inhaled smoke.

Cools down

On Friday morning, the fire service is in the process of cooling down the battery that started burning on board the coast guard ship “Hopen”.

– There is no danger of the fire developing further, the fire service has reasonably good control and is continuing to cool down the battery pack, says Arild Reite, operations manager in Møre and Romsdal police district.

The cause of the fire is so far unknown. The police have a patrol on site to carry out their investigations.

Big investment in the Coast Guard

KV “Hopen” becomes sister ship to the two coast guard ships “Jan Mayen” and “Bjørnøya”. The hull is built in Romania and arrived at the shipyard in Tomrefjord in February. The construction of these three ships is one of the largest purchases the Norwegian defense has ever made in the maritime sector.
