Offenbach’s treasurer Peter Freier anticipates a “significant deficit” due to the Corona crisis this year. Magistrate imposes a 20 percent household ban.

The corona crisis hits Offenbach hard. Because it expects loss of revenue and additional expenses from the pandemic, the magistrate has again decided to block the budget. All planned administrative expenses are to be cut by 20 percent. This was announced by treasurer Peter Freier (CCU) yesterday. He expects a “significant deficit” this year due to significant falls, particularly in the area of trade tax revenues and rising expenses due to Corona.

The regional council had approved the 2020 budget, which included trade tax revenues of 77 million euros. The treasurer actually only assumes 53 million euros due to repayments and tax breaks. With the budget freeze, the city also wants to make it clear that it is doing everything in its power to meet the obligations from the debt relief program “Hessenkasse”, said Freier.

This includes generating surpluses for the annual debt repayment of investment loans. These currently amount to 360 million euros. The repayment of the loans is around 20 million euros. Freier urged the administration to use all the savings potential beyond the ban.
