The 47th edition of Filmfest Gent started in a minor key last night. Corona had swept away all the glitz and glamor that comes with a red carpet, and the drizzly rain didn’t help either. The most photographed couple were Prime Minister De Croo and his wife.

“I come here to help the hard-hit cultural sector,” said the prime minister. However, he could not rule out that the government would close the cinemas during the Filmfest. “I’m not going to anticipate that. We meet on Friday. ”

The fact that the annual film party takes place at all in these harsh times and that 110 films from all over the world can be seen in the next twelve days is an achievement in itself. “We doubted for a long time whether we should allow the Filmfest to take place in these circumstances,” admits program director Wim De Witte honestly. “Even today, I don’t know if we made the right choice and that’s when I think about our budget.”
Big stars dropped out
Now that Belgium is at the top of the list of most affected countries in Europe, it should come as no surprise that almost all foreign guests have dropped out en masse. Fortunately, some clean people from their own country braved the virus and the rain to make an appearance on the red carpet. Among them: actor couple Filip Peeters and An Miller and actors Anemone Valcke, Titus De Voogdt, Sam Louwyck and Dominique Van Malder.
