Vic Akers, Arsenal’s former club manager and organizer, talked about a somewhat vague incident from 2013 after a match against Manchester United, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the Red Devils, scored by Robin van Persie.
Akers told the Metro newspaper, “He’s gone completely crazy. I didn’t notice that he did that until after they got out of the stadium.”
“Manchester United has a trash can, behind the door that the players are coming out of, I was the last to come out, and as I passed the basket I saw the sleeves of the shirt in it.”
“I told my girl, Paul go out and see me from the player who faces United without sleeves now, and we found out that Matthew Flamini was of course crazy,” he said.
English newspapers have reported 2013 reports of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s wrath at the time, from Matthew Flamini to his player, but the cause of that anger has not been revealed, apparently because of the sleeves of his shirt and his violation of the artillery rules.
Arsenal used to stick to an old custom, which is that all players wear a shirt the same length as the captain worn, and he only recently gave it up.
In the 2013 game, captain Thomas Vermaelen was wearing a long-sleeved shirt against Manchester United in November 2013, and all players followed their captain except for Flamini who cut his shirt sleeves before heading to Old Trafford.
One of the most successful coaches of the Arsenal women’s team throughout his history continued: “I told the coach, he is out of control, everyone is wearing long-sleeved shirts, a system we work with, and Flamini cut his sleeves, I do not accept it.”
“Then that problem came out of the dressing room as you read the story after that, as I say, there was some shouting and exchange of words after the game.”
“Of course I cannot say and do a lot during the match, but then, I can and I told him that he is out of control and order, and he told me that he does not have to follow the system.”
“I told him, ‘Well, you have to follow him,'” he said. “It is Arsenal Football Club. We are together. No one can go out and do something different. That is not how the club works.
“In each case, the coach also did not leave him and spoke to him that week after the match,” he said.
Akers, former left-back for Watford, coached Arsenal women from 1987 to 2009, winning 36 trophies with the team.
