The Corona crisis shows clear signs of braking when new motor vehicles are registered in Switzerland – and in Europe. In March the entry into force of new vehicles in Germany decreased significantly after there had been a significant decrease in the previous two months.
–
A total of 26,636 motor vehicles were put into circulation across Switzerland in March 2020. This is 34 percent less than in the corresponding month of the previous year, as the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) announced on Friday. The car dealerships are closed due to the corona pandemic. The automakers have also shut down their factories.

The change in passenger cars compared to the previous year was even –39 percent to 17,598 vehicles. The registrations of petrol engines (–50 percent) and diesel cars (–43 percent) suffered the most. Approvals for electric cars also decreased (-17 percent). Only hybrid cars saw an increase of 61 percent.
–
March is part of the declining two previous months. For the first quarter of 2020, therefore, there was a decrease of 19.5 percent to 76’152 vehicles when all motor vehicles came into force. Passenger cars lost 23 percent to 55,589 cars.
